Flamboyant Understatement |
|
|
The Phillips Group was charged with designing a stately boardroom table for a major financial firm in New York. They came up with an elegant combination of materials: plain sliced cherry, quartered and ropey cherry, and, the highlight, in the center, flamboyant crotch mahogany. WallGoldfinger was pleased to have the opportunity to apply its 35 years of expertise in veneering, cabinetmaking and finishing to the challenging task of pulling it all together. |

Rick Boutin (L), master cabinetmaker, and Andy Kimball, Komo router programmer, discuss the joinery of the veneered table top panels. As seen here, crotch mahogany in its unfinished state has a fairly muted appearance. This will change dramatically with the application of stains, toners and top coats.

Here one of the table end sections, midway through the finishing process - the materials are beginning to come to life.

WG finisher Ray Boyce examines his handiwork: a full filled, high gloss finish that captures the unique beauty of the table’s exotic veneers.

The table's base mirrors the shape of the top. The "bump out" immediately below the top provides room for the power/data units and speakers while also allowing greater leg room. Hinged panels at the ends allow access to wiring and, yes, there are lights inside.

|
The designer and client wanted an emphatically all-wood table so even the speaker grills are veneered.

Measuring 20'-0" by 9'-0", the elliptical table seats 18 people and is fitted with a suite of power & data hookups, speakers and microphones. |
