Exotics Are Our Specialty

We love to work with exotic materials, particularly exotic woods. In this case, an 11'-6" x 8'-6" elliptical table designed by New York’s Switzer Group features a handsome center sunburst in crotch mahogany veneer. Crotch mahogany is an unforgiving and unstable material with unmatched visual appeal. The trick is to process this potato chip-like veneer with flattening agents, assemble and press it with care, and then seal it with a finish impervious to moisture. Wall Goldfinger uses polyester topcoats to create this barrier and thus prevent the shrinking and swelling of this temperamental cut of wood. A little extra work and little extra expertise but we think the results speak for themselves.

The crotch sunburst is surrounded by a radial crossband of quartered sapele which is in turn surrounded by the working surface clad in one of our favorite materials, Majilite artificial leather. Majlite offers unparalleled durability and stain resistance and, in the unlikely event of damage, can be replaced with an exact color and texture match. On the tech side, the table features four power and data hatches and eight microphones.

Ed Mazuroski, Exotic Veneer Guy

Although he blushingly resists all praise, Ed Mazuroski, WG’s veneer foreman, is the best in the business. A product of Boston’s famous North Bennett Street School, Ed has over 27 years of experience as a cabinetmaker and, more particularly, a veneer craftsman. With his encyclopedic knowledge of veneers and meticulous assembly techniques, Ed is a key to making projects like the one above happen.
